This is a penultimate summer pilgrimage festival to honor Senhor Santo Cristo in the remote Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo, São Jorge. Held on the first Sunday of September (with prior triduum), it involves a candlelight procession from the shrine to the lagoon (around the caldeira rim) and a "Sermão da Praça" (public sermon) delivered outdoors. Thousands of pilgrims from São Jorge and neighboring islands gather for masses (Missa de Festa) and communal meals (sopas do Espírito Santo). Overnight camping in the dense valley is common. Despite its remote location, it fuses deep religious devotion with a rustic communal atmosphere — pilgrims of all faith share in the local tradition of priestly sermon and food distribution, followed by fireworks and dance at night 1 2.
The festival recites a centuries-old "vow" to honor the divine image found by a shepherd. It denotes the intense faith of islanders working in a harsh environment, symbolizing human perseverance and gratitude. The two-day Romaria integrates Christian liturgy with popular culture (street food, music). As one of only three major Christ cult sites in Azores, it sustains an important link in the archipelago’s religious geography and islanders’ identity 1 2.
