Kraków’s historic nativity scene tradition (szopka) culminates in an annual competition on the Main Market Square. Craftsmen and artists build elaborate, lightweight nativity displays combining Kraków’s skyline and the Christmas story 1 2. On the first Thursday of December these szopki are displayed steps of the Adam Mickiewicz Monument, then paraded and moved to the Krzysztofory Palace exhibition. Prizes are awarded the following Sunday, and the exhibition remains open through winter 1 3. The contest (first held 1937 and revived 1945) is recognized by UNESCO and is a deep part of Kraków’s identity.
The szopka tradition dates to the 19th century and has become emblematic of Kraków’s identity and Christmas heritage 1 2. The first formal Szopka contest was organized in 1937 by the Historical Museum of Kraków, with 86 participants, though World War II interrupted the events 2. After 1945 the contest resumed on the first Thursday of December each year and continues uninterrupted 2. The practice of building Kraków nativity scenes is a living folk craft passed down through generations, involving skilled artisans and community support 1 2.
