Wilamowskie Śmiergusty is an annual two-day folk festival held in Wilamowice, southern Poland 1 2. It combines the ancient Śmiergust Easter Monday water-dousing tradition 3 with modern cultural celebrations. The festival features colorful parades, brass band concerts, majorette dance shows, workshops, competitions (e.g. mask contest), regional food tastings, and folk music stages 4 5. Thousands of local residents and regional visitors attend the lively street processions and performances. A highlight is the Sunday procession (following a church Mass) in which participants in flamboyant traditional Śmiergust costumes march from the Sanctuary of St. Joseph Bilczewski to the LKS Wilamowiczanka stadium, reinforcing Vilamovian heritage 6 7. The festival concludes with highland folk concerts and communal dancing, strengthening local identity and community bonds 8 9.
This festival is deeply rooted in Wilamowice’s unique Vilamovian culture. The Śmiergust tradition dates back at least a century, originally tied to Easter Monday rituals brought by 13th-century Flemish settlers 1 2. Young men historically cross-dressed and sprinkled water on young women as a symbolic spring renewal and courtship rite 3 2. Wilamowice’s distinct Wymysorys (Vilamovian) language and folk customs have been preserved through generations, making Śmiergusty a key marker of the community's identity. The modern festival (held since 2023) reinterprets these customs for a wider audience while preserving authenticity 4 2.
