Riddu Riđđu Festivàla ("little storm on the coast" in Sami) is an annual international Indigenous arts and music festival held each July in Manndalen, Kåfjord (coastal Troms) 1 2. Started in 1991 by Sea Sami youth seeking pride in their heritage, it has become one of Europe’s most significant Indigenous festivals 1 2. The festival presents a broad program of Sami and global Indigenous culture – including music, literature, film, art, deity workshipseminars, and children’s activities – and is largely outdoors, with camping provided for attendees 1 3.
Riddu Riđđu grew out of a context where Sami language and identity were marginalized in Norway 1. The festival embodies a revival of coastal Sami (Sea Sami) culture, providing insight into Sami traditions and contemporary life. It emphasizes pride in Sami heritage, including language and dress, and connects the local community with Indigenous peoples worldwide.
