Paaskiviikko is an annual week-long Kven culture festival held each June across North Troms (notably in Storfjord, Kåfjord, Nordreisa, Lyngen, Skjervøy, and Kvænangen) 1 2. It features concerts, performances, film screenings, language courses, and other events aimed at celebrating and preserving Kven heritage. Attendees experience traditional Kven music, language "Paaskiviikko bingo," storytelling, and food such as bidos (reindeer soup). The festival’s activities take place in cultural centres, churches and community halls, providing a living showcase of Kven art, crafts, and history (for example lectures on place names and historical traditions) 1 3.
The Kven are descendants of Finnish settlers in Northern Norway, whose culture and language were long marginalized. Paaskiviikko was created to revitalize Kven identity and language. It takes place at a season of renewal (summer solstice), reflecting Kven ties to nature and Northern heritage. Community organizations (like Halti Kvenkultursenter) run workshops and performances to reconnect people (especially youth) with Kven songs, recipes, clothing, and storytelling 1 2.
