Leiden’s Liberation Festival commemorating 1574 local freedom from a Spanish siege. On October 3 each year, the city honors this patriot victory with traditional pea soup and herring, parades (including children’s hourglass races and folk music), and a funfair in Leiden. It is deeply rooted in local heritage (not originally for tourists). Residents mark the day as a part of Leiden’s identity and celebrate volunteerism and Dutch resilience.
The festival has become a civic symbol of Leiden’s independence and pride. Local folklore (serving pea soup in brothels overnight, children carrying lanterns) stems directly from siege history and is explained in local lore.
