Bloemencorso Zundert is the world’s largest flower parade, held annually in the first week of September in the town of Zundert. It features dozens of enormous floats entirely covered in dahlias, each built by a neighborhood team. Every float is a marvel of creativity and engineering, renewed each year. The event draws tens of thousands of visitors to witness this spectacle of color and craftsmanship 1. It is a volunteer-driven festival: the local community cultivates dahlias all year and begins construction in summer. The final parade on Sunday afternoon is a major draw, followed by the awarding of prizes for the best designs.
The Corso is intrinsic to Zundert’s identity. Founded in 1936 to honor Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday, it has become a pride of the town 1. Locals often say they learn corsomaking from infancy – historically, families pass down skills of planting bulbs and building floats. The festival embodies the “Brabantse gezelligheid” (Brabant conviviality) through collective effort: half the town works on floats while the rest watches and volunteers. Its inclusion on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage list (since 2012) and national heritage recognition reflect how Zunderters see the Corso as a communal heritage, not just an annual parade 1 2.
