The Handelse Processie is an annual pilgrimage from Valkenswaard to the village of Handel (40 km) to honor the Virgin Mary. On a Saturday in mid-June, thousands of participants depart by foot at dawn from Valkenswaard and walk through the Brabant countryside to the pilgrimage chapel in Handel 1. They stay overnight in Handel and return by foot on Sunday morning. Organized by a centuries-old brotherhood, the two-day event is marked by religious services and the use of horse-drawn carts (‘huifkarren’) as symbols of tradition 1 2. The Handelse Processie is deeply meaningful to the local Catholic community and has recently been recognized as intangible cultural heritage in the Netherlands 3.
Originating in the 17th century to pray for relief from pestilence, the Handel procession has grown into a major devotional event 1 2. Generations of participants from Valkenswaard and nearby towns consider it their duty to undertake the pilgrimage as an act of faith. It is one of the oldest uninterrupted processions in the region; pilgrims and villagers maintain the routes and stations of the cross that date back hundreds of years. The Catholic parish in Handel, site of reported miracles, has made Handel a recognized pilgrimage site since medieval times 3. Therefore, the procession weaves together local history, faith, and identity in this part of North Brabant.
