The Boemeldonck Carnival is a lively local carnaval festival in the village of Prinsenbeek (North Brabant). Organized by the local carnival association (BAK), it completely transforms the village: everyone dresses in costume and joins parades with music and giant floats. By the BAK's account it was a "prachtig volksfeest" (wonderful folk festival) of togetherness 1, reflecting that nearly all locals take part. It is as much for participation as for spectators, embodying the social cohesion of the community.
Carnival in southern Netherlands is rooted in pre-Lenten Catholic traditions. In Boemeldonck, the carnival emphasizes community identity: building floats and celebrating together is seen as strengthening social bonds. Village groups (from children to seniors) all collaborate for the festival 1.
