One of the oldest and largest inland water festivals in Europe, Sneekweek is a week-long sailing regatta and folk festival each August. Every year thousands of people gather to watch or compete in sailing races on the Sneekermeer and to enjoy evening festivities in Sneek's historic city center 1 2. The event features daily yacht races, including the famed "Hardzeildag" (windward leg competition), nightly live music on outdoor stages, a fairground on the boulevard, and a spectacular official opening ceremony with illuminated boats, cannon salutes, Frisian anthem singing, and fireworks 2 3.
Sneekweek dates back to local sailing competitions in the 19th century and became formalized in the 1930s. It remains a combination of Friesland’s seafaring heritage and festive celebration. The event deepens community identity via traditional sailing and public celebrations by residents and visitors alike.
