A large-scale, annual 10-day arts festival held in mid-June across historic venues in Valletta, combining theater, dance, visual arts, and music. MIAF showcases contemporary performances and local cultural heritage through site-specific productions (e.g. dance pieces in Valletta’s underground cisterns and a musical cruise on the Grand Harbour) 1. Visitors experience world-class artists alongside Maltese performers, highlighting the island’s evolving arts scene.
Launched in recent years to continue the momentum of Valletta 2018 (European Capital of Culture), MIAF was created to provide a platform for both local and international arts. It integrates Malta’s history by using iconic heritage sites (palaces, theatres, fortresses) as stages 1 2. The festival blends traditional Maltese storytelling with modern expressions, reinforcing national pride in cultural innovation.
