The Tikveš Wine Festival (Тиквешки гроздобер) is an annual mid-September grape harvest celebration in Kavadarci, central Macedonian wine country. It features a wine carnival, king and queen pageant, ceremonial first grape cutting and a cultural program with local music and dance 1 2. Locals toast the new vintage in the city square and taste regional wines amid folk ensembles and art exhibits. The atmosphere is both festive and authentically rural, highlighting Tikveš wine heritage.
The festival goes back to ancient Dionysian traditions of honoring the grape harvest. In socialist Yugoslavia it was formalized into a large wine harvest festival starting in the 1960s, reflecting the importance of Kavadarci’s viticulture 1. Tikves has long been called the ‘wine heartland’ of Macedonia, and the festival celebrates this identity each September.
