Ilinden Days (Илинденски денови) is Bitola’s major international folk music and dance festival held every July. It spans two weeks of ethnographic performances, parades and concerts featuring traditional Macedonian and international folk groups 1 2. A highlight is the grand folklore procession down historic Širok Sokak street on the first evening, merging local band ensembles and foreign folk troupes. Attendees experience Bitola’s living tradition of music, costume, and dance in an immersive street festival atmosphere.
Named after the Ilinden (St. Elijah) uprising date, the festival reinforces national heritage through living folklore. Bitola, a historical cultural center, established this festival in 1971 to preserve peasant traditions and share them globally 1. It is now associated with Macedonia’s identity on the UNESCO folklore map.
