The Bucak Sesleri festival is an international competition of ethnic-pop songs held in Gagauzia, celebrating folk music across Turkic regions. Each June or July, contestants from many countries perform two songs (one from their own language culture and one global hit). The festival rotates location yearly among Comrat and villages (Baurchi, Congaz, Cazaclia, Joltai). It features youth performers, panel of judges, and a culminating gala with professional artists. In 2018 (6th edition), it included participants from 13 countries and a concert with popular artists. The event highlights Gagauz cultural openness and promotes traditional music forms. Visitors experience vibrant vocal performances, voting events, and a lively closing concert 1 2.
‘Bucak’ means 'region' in Turkic; the name implies an event bridging communities. Gagauzia has strong cultural ties to Turkish and Balkan folk traditions. The festival showcases Gagauz hospitality by inviting diverse performers and integrating their cultures. It serves as a cultural exchange, reinforcing Gagauz identity as part of the Turkic cultural world while embracing other ethnic sounds.
