A vibrant two-day cultural festival celebrating Latvia’s ethnic minority communities, held in Liepāja each summer. Performances of traditional songs, dances, and crafts from various national groups take place on the central stage (Rožu laukums) and around the city 1 2. Highlights include a festive procession parade, concerts at Lielais Dzintars hall, and street exhibitions of folk art. Audiences can sample different national cuisines and attend craft workshops, gaining insight into the traditions of Azerbaijanis, Belarusians, Bulgarians, Jews, Georgians, Russians, Chinese, Italians, Lithuanians, Moldovans, Poles, Roma, Spaniards, Pakistanis, Ukrainians, and Germans living in Latvia 1 2. All events are free and open to the public, with local participants wearing native costumes and performing folk music in both open-air and concert venues.
Organized by Latvia’s Ministry of Culture and the National Cultural Center, this festival honors the country’s multicultural heritage. It is part of the national 20th-anniversary celebrations of EU membership 1. The festival promotes inter-cultural dialogue by showcasing the living traditions of minority communities. Involving dozens of folk ensembles, it provides a stage for preserving and sharing lesser-known cultural expressions (linguistic, musical, and culinary) in Latvia. The festival’s name ("Vaļā vērti atslēdziņ’!") evokes opening doors to diverse cultures and reflects the theme of unity through cultural exchange.
