Liichtmëssdag (Candlemas) on February 2nd is an ancient tradition in Luxembourg. In the evening, groups of neighborhood children carry homemade lanterns ("Liichtebengelcher") from house to house, singing the folk song "Léiwer Härgottsblieschen" while asking for sweets, bacon and peas 1 2. The procession of lanterns and singing children is meant to bring good health and prosperity to the community.
This Candlemas custom is said to date back to Celtic rituals and was later linked to St. Blaise. Today it is a purely cultural celebration. It reflects communal care and generosity, as children invoke blessings for the household in exchange for treats 1 2.
