Rasos šventė Kernavėje is an annual midsummer solstice celebration held at the ancient Kernavė archaeological site in Lithuania 1 2. It is known for its authentic revival of ancient Baltic rituals (sun, fire, water, plants) based on 1967 reconstructions of tradition 1 2. Every June community members dress in folk costumes, weave floral wreaths, light ceremonial bonfires on the hillforts and river bank, sing traditional sutartinės (songs) and dance. Participants gather medicinal herbs and honor ancestors around an altar, exchanging folk songs and games late into the night. This deeply rooted festival emphasizes harmony with nature and cultural continuity.
Midsummer Rasos (later called Kupolės or Christianized as Joninės) is a deeply rooted Lithuanian folk tradition celebrating the summer solstice. These rituals honor the peak of the sun’s power, the longest day, and nature’s bounty through fire-lighting, herbal rites, and fertility dances 1. Kernavė itself is historically significant (often called the Lithuanian pagan capital or “Lithuanian Troy”) 2, making it a culturally resonant site to host this ancestral celebration.
