The Festa dei Gigli is an annual folk-religious celebration in Nola (Province of Naples) honoring San Paolino, the city’s 5th-century patron saint. Each year in late June (the Sunday after June 22), neighborhoods compete by building enormous wooden "gigli" (lily-shaped obelisks) up to 25 meters tall, richly decorated with symbolic artworks. On the grand finale day (Ballata dei Gigli), teams of local men called “cullatori” carry these majestic flowered structures on their shoulders through Nola’s historic streets, accompanied by music and processions. The festival emphasizes local identity and religious devotion, tracing back to the legend of Paolino’s return from captivity. UNESCO inscribed it in 2014 for its cultural value. Visitors can stand along the parade route to admire the phantasmagoric sight, but should remain respectful of the sacred procession of the saint and the guild-based heritage it represents 1 2.
According to legend recounted by Pope Gregory the Great, after Saint Paolino ransomed his fellow citizens from captivity in the 12th century, the grateful Nola populace welcomed him back with floral towers. Over time, each tower became a gigantic obelisk called a "Giglio" placed on chariots for procession. The Gigli are built by local artisan guilds and adorned with papier-mâché scenes related to Paolino or current themes. On the final Sunday of the festival, thousands celebrate as interlocking communities bear the Gigli on their shoulders in rhythmic procession. The event blends pagan and Christian symbolism (the lilies were once tree symbols of fertility), and it defines Nola’s cultural heritage 1 2.

Visitors watch from street edges and piazzas; it is a festive atmosphere but remains reverent. It’s best to avoid obstructing the procession and to respect instructions, as the structures are heavy and the path is narrow.
