Every January 16, residents of Ottana build and light a massive bonfire ("S’Ogulòne de Sant’Antoni") to honor Sant’Antonio Abate 1 2. After a solemn morning mass, the community ignites the aromatic woodpile in the main piazza. Then follows "sa prima essía," the first procession of the year featuring Ottana’s traditional masked horsemen (Boes, Merdules, and Filonzana) who solemnly circle the fire thrice in a ritual blending pagan and Christian elements 3 2. The event is the centerpiece of carnival beginnings here, with folk singing, dances, and communal sharing of votive bread.
This festival reflects a rural vow to Sant’Antonio, patron of animals and flame, that locals maintain fervently. The flame (S’Ogulòne) symbolizes rebirth of light after winter and divine protection for the livestock and crops. The masked characters (boes and merdules) derive from ancient pre-Christian rites and their appearance around Sant’Antonio’s fire ushers in the carnival season in Barbagia 1 2. The celebration intertwines Catholic liturgy (bonfire blessing and bread distribution) with archaic folklore (horse processions and masquerade dances), illustrating Ottana’s unique identity.
