The Mamoiada Carnival is a famous Barbagia tradition (January–March) spotlighting the Mamuthones and Issohadores masks. During the festival, black-clad Mamuthones wearing heavy wooden masks and bells parade solemnly through the village streets, followed by spirited Issohadores in red masks swinging lassos 1 2. The dense rhythm of the bells and ancient chants give an eerie, primal feel to this pre-Lenten celebration of Sardinian pastoral heritage.
Widely held to be among Sardinia’s oldest pagan carnivals, the Mamuthones parade (especially on Carnival Sunday and Tuesday) represents fertility and the cycle of seasons. The masks and costumes symbolize ancestral agrarian rites, making it a potent expression of island folklore 1 2.
