Nuoro’s Sagra del Redentore is a renowned August festival blending faith and folklore. Celebrated since 1901, it honors the bronze Christ statue atop Monte Ortobene. The event features mass pilgrimages and one of Sardinia’s largest costume parades: hundreds of folk groups from all over Sardinia march in traditional dress through the city 1 2, followed by music and dance performances. It’s considered an extremely authentic folk celebration of central Sardinia’s culture.
Originated as a 1900 Jubilee votive project, the Redentore festival has become the most awaited end-of-summer event in Barbagia 1. The combination of solemn religious rituals on Monte Ortobene with a grand secular folkloric pageant in Nuoro’s streets reflects the strong cultural pride of Nuoro and surrounding communities.
