The Faradda di li Candareri (Descent of the Candlesticks) is an ancient civic-religious procession held every August 14 in Sassari. Eleven large wooden votive candles, each carried by a guild of devotees, are paraded through the city from Piazza Castello to the Church of Santa Maria di Betlem 1. The ritual, known as sa 'festha manna' (the great feast), honors the Dormite Madonna and renews a centuries-old communal vow, with agile dances and drum rhythms accompanying the ceri.
Sassari’s community annually comes together in a vibrant devotional celebration. The tiring and joyful carry of candles symbolizes the city’s respect to the Virgin. It is a hallmark of the city’s identity, reinforcing intergenerational bonds through a shared ceremonial heritage stretching back over 500 years 1.
