The Foire de Saint-Ours (Fiera di Sant’Orso) is a centuries-old artisan fair held annually in Aosta on January 30–31. It is one of Europe’s largest traditional craft markets, with nearly 1,000 stalls and over 206,000 visitors in two days 1 2. Artisans from Aosta Valley and beyond gather in the historic center with woodcarvings, wrought ironwork, stone sculptures, textiles and local culinary products. The town’s streets and squares overflow with hand-made furniture, kitchenware, toys, jewelry and more, preserving skills of local woodturners, blacksmiths and sculptors 2 3. Visitors experience an “authentic old-world atmosphere” of communal celebration along with a lively evening festival (the “Veillà”) of music, dance and open cellars 4 3.
Dating back to at least the 10th century (legendary origins around the year 1000), the fair developed from a medieval agricultural and artisan market dedicated to Saint Ours, the valley’s patron saint. It traditionally allowed craftsmen from nearby villages to display and sell wares in the city 1 2. Over time, the Foire became a fixed fixture in Aosta’s cultural identity – a showcase of Valdôtain craftsmanship, rural folk art and regional pride. In local view, it is not just a market but a communal celebration: the Fundación Cologni notes it “represents, for all valdostani, a moment of festivity and cultural belonging” 1. Ancillary events (like the evening “Veillà” dances) and gastronomic pavilions (showcasing regional food) reinforce its social significance.
