The Giostra del Saracino is Arezzo’s historic medieval jousting tournament held annually in Piazza Grande 1 2. Competing districts field knights who charge with lances at the “Buratto” target. Dante himself described similar tournays in Arezzo 3. The event features a medieval parade, flag-throwing, drummers and costumed alegorical processions, embodying the city’s medieval heritage 4.
This festival traces back to Arezzo’s chivalric past and civic religion. It is tied to the feast days of St. Donatus and the Madonna of Comfort (July and September).
