The Manannán International Festivals are an annual series of performing-arts festivals held at the Erin Arts Centre in Port Erin 1. Established in 1975 by John Bethell, the festivals bring world-class music, opera, drama and dance to the island; the Visitor Guide notes they are “among the Isle of Man’s most prestigious cultural events” 1. The festival includes a Summer Festival (late June/early July) and an Opera Festival in September, featuring concerts by international artists alongside local performers. Attendees can expect classical recitals, orchestral and chamber music, theater, and community music workshops throughout the summer season.
The festival takes its name from Manannán mac Lir, a mythic sea god of Manx legend, reflecting its role in promoting Manx cultural identity through the arts. It was founded to provide a high-quality program of classical and folk arts on the Isle of Man, bridging local tradition and international culture. Over time it has helped foster a vibrant cultural scene on the island and supported Manx musicians.
