The Vas County Open-Air Museum (Vasi Skanzen) in Szombathely hosts a St. Martin’s Day fair marking the end of the farming year. Local artisans, farmers and vendors offer traditional products, goose specialities, and the new “újbor” wine. The event is an open-air market with folklore demonstrations to preserve and share old Martinmas customs.

In the Vas region, as elsewhere in Hungary, St. Martin’s Day features lantern parades, “libazsíros kenyér” (goose fat bread), and sweet dough treats. At this museum fair, visitors can see and taste how villagers of the 19th century would celebrate Martin’s Day. It is more of a living tradition showcase than a religious ceremony; the emphasis is on communal eating, crafts and folklore.
