Busójárás is an annual folk carnival festival in Mohács (Baranya County, Hungary), marking the end of the winter season and the climax of the Hungarian Farsang (carnival) just before Lent 1 2. It features hundreds of participants wearing carved wooden Busó masks and sheepskins, followed by raucous parades, music, folk dances, and large bonfires. The festival’s vivid costumes and satirical spirit symbolize chasing winter away and welcoming spring. Busójárás has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list (since 2009) and is widely regarded as one of Hungary’s most emblematic traditional festivals 1 3.
Farsang is the carnival season in Hungary (from Epiphany to Lent), traditionally a time of feasting and merrymaking before Lenten fasting 1. In Mohács, a multi-ethnic community (notably the Slavonic Šokci minority) historically developed unique masquerade customs. According to local folklore, Šokci storytellers in the 18th century brought mask-runner traditions from the Balkans, and by the late 18th/19th century these evolved into the present Busójárás ritual 2 3. The festival blends Christian carnival influences with older spring-cleaning rites, serving as a communal release from winter’s hardships.
