The Zemplén Festival is a ten-day summer music and cultural festival held across the scenic Zemplén Hills (Tokaj-Hegyalja) of Northern Hungary, primarily based in Sárospatak and other small villages. It features a diverse lineup of Hungarian and international classical concerts, jazz, folk and world music, dance theater, and children’s programs. Held outdoors at historic sites (castle courtyards, wine cellars, open-air stages), it highlights local tradition by combining high-quality performances with regional hospitality — guests are often offered local wines and foods during events. The festival is known for arts tourism, drawing visitors to the picturesque villages of Tokaj, Erdőhorváti, Tarcal, Mád, Tolcsva, and nearby communities, and is heavily focused on showcasing local heritage, wine culture, and historical landmarks (e.g. Sárospatak’s Rákóczi Castle, Tokaj amphitheater). Attendees experience world-class music in a uniquely Hungarian countryside setting, often with wine tastings and cultural tours included.
Zemplén Festival was founded in the early 1990s (about 1992) by Hungarian conductor Gábor Hollerung (artistic director) and was long led by founder János Rolla. It was conceived to promote the region’s cultural heritage and tourism by bringing professional musicians to rural venues. The program aims to connect culture and tourism, featuring concerts in Renaissance and Baroque castles, historic churches, vineyards, and taverns. Locals participate as hosts and performers of traditional music and hospitality. Over time the festival has grown to include nearly 40 venues across 25 villages, receiving support from local municipalities and sponsors. It serves both as a musical showcase and as a living presentation of Zemplén’s history, folklore and viticulture, reinforcing regional identity.
