The Rijeka Carnival is one of Europe’s largest and oldest carnival celebrations, held annually from mid-January (Feast of St. Anthony) through Ash Wednesday. It transforms the city into a continuous parade of masquerade balls, concerts, street performances and folk dances 1 2. The highlight is the International Carnival Parade on the main street (Korzo) – in 2025 it featured ~100 floats and over 9,000 participants from Croatia and abroad 2 3. The carnival concludes with the burning of 'Pust', a symbolic effigy, marking the end of festivities.
Carnival in Rijeka is deeply rooted in local identity, known as the 'Fifth Season'. It originated in the 1980s and has become a defining tradition for the city. Each year townsfolk and visitors alike embrace absurdity and satire, continuing a pre-Lenten custom that distinguishes Rijeka from other Croatian cities 1.
