An annual festival dedicated to preserving the endangered Istrioto dialect (ancient Romance language of southern Istria). It brings together all six towns where Istrioto is spoken (Rovinj, Bale, Vodnjan, Fažana, Galižana, Šišan) with a three-day program of literary readings, choir and folklore performances, workshops, and tastings. The event emphasizes using the ancestral language in everyday life and showcases songs, poetry, and traditions in Istrioto 1 2.
The Istrioto dialect is a pre-Venetian Romance language historically spoken in the "language island" of southern Istria. With only a few thousand speakers remaining, the festival serves as a cultural hub to unite their communities. Speakers of Croatian, Italian, and Istroromanian live here; the dialect was first studied academically in the 19th century but became endangered during 20th-century migrations. The festival, founded by the Šišan Italian community, builds on school and community efforts to keep Istrioto alive 1 2.
