Picokijada is a large annual summer festival held in Đurđevac, based on a local legend about a rooster ('picok') that saved the town during a Turkish siege. The highlight is a theatrical re-enactment of the Legend of the Picok (the crowing rooster story) performed outdoors at the town's Old Town fortress 1. The 56th Picokijada took place June 28-30, 2024 1, with concerts, a market, and sports events accompanying the main legend play on Saturday evening.
This festival blends history, theater and local folklore. It originated in the early 1960s and now spans a weekend in late June. The villagers and visitors gather to watch the dramatic performance of the Picok legend, enjoy popular music concerts, traditional food (kulen), and community fair rides. It strongly embodies Đurđevac’s identity and attracts people from across Croatia, making it one of continental Croatia’s major folklore celebrations 1.
