Primarolia is a contemporary cultural festival in Aigio that celebrates the history of the Corinthian black currant ('mavri stafida') and local maritime heritage. Held annually in early fall (recently also in Patras), it features an international contemporary art exhibition and cultural events (museum exhibitions, workshops, screenings) inspired by local history. Visitors encounter local artists and international creators presenting site-specific art, together with community discussions. It blends authentic heritage (black currant trade) with avant-garde cultural expression, offering insight into the region’s identity through a creative lens.
Named after the 19th-century sailing ships ('primarolia') that carried Aigio’s currant cargoes to European ports, the festival ties modern art to local history. It is organized by a cultural organization in collaboration with the Municipality of Aigialeia. The theme changes yearly (e.g., Networks, Glocalities) to reflect aspects of local heritage and global connections.
