Babougera is an annual rite in the villages of Kali Vrisi (Drama) on January 6–8. Participants (mainly local men) don goat-skin and bell costumes and parade through the village making loud noises. The festival culminates in a satirical Dionysian wedding procession which playfully inverts social roles 1. The custom has deep roots in ancient Dionysian cults (a Dionysus sanctuary was found nearby) and was revived as a cultural heritage event 2 1.
A centuries-old fertility and renewal ritual, the Babougera has come to symbolize Kali Vrisi’s identity. The tradition, linked to an ancient temple of Dionysus found nearby 1, was embraced by the community and recorded in Greece’s intangible cultural heritage registry.
