The Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebaste are the titular saints of Xeropotamou Monastery. Each year on this feast, the monastic community gathers in front of the monastery’s katholikon to celebrate the martyrdom of 40 Roman soldiers for their Christian faith in the 4th century. The day is marked by festive services, with monks and pilgrims praying together and lighting candles at the iconostasis devoted to these martyrs.
The legend of the 40 Martyrs (Sebastia, 320 AD) is deeply rooted in Orthodox heritage. Xeropotamou Monastery venerates them as patron saints. The feast carries strong cultural meaning, symbolizing unity and steadfast faith — especially poignant on Athos, where rededication to such sacrifice inspires the monastic brothers each year.
