The Nice Carnival is the largest winter carnival in France and one of the world’s most famous. For two weeks in February, the city is animated by elaborate parades of floats, giant puppet heads, marching bands and flower battles. Themes change annually (e.g. 2025 “Roi des Océans”). Visitors experience colorful shows along the Promenade des Anglais and Place Masséna, with nightly and daytime parades. Attendees witness illuminated night parades (Corso illuminé) and the famous Flower Parades (Batailles de Fleurs), where costumed participants atop floats throw thousands of flowers into the crowd. The festival creates a carnival atmosphere reflecting Nice’s history as a winter resort and carnival tradition 1 2.
Carnival in Nice dates back to medieval times (first mention c.1294) and was formalized in 1873 to entertain winter visitors. It blends Catholic pre-Lenten roots and local creativity. Elaborate papier-mâché floats and "grosse têtes" characters reflect Provençal artistry. The festival became an integral part of Niçois culture, symbolizing community creativity and joie de vivre. In 2019 it joined France’s national intangible heritage inventory, recognizing the skilled savoir-faire of local artisans 1 2.
