Fête de la Musique is an annual nationwide French music festival on 21 June, celebrating the summer solstice with free, open-air performances. It was launched in Paris in 1982{ 1 2 as a "popular, spontaneous event" to showcase amateur and professional musicians. Today thousands of concerts take place across France and around 1,000 cities worldwide on June 21 2 3, featuring music in streets, bars, churches and parks from afternoon into the night. Performances of every style, often impromptu and participatory, create a festive atmosphere throughout the community.
Created by France’s Ministry of Culture in 1982 (by Jack Lang) to promote music and amateur musicians, Fête de la Musique has become a hallmark of French culture and a global "World Music Day." It reflects democratic participation in the arts 1 2 and emphasizes free public enjoyment of culture.
