Åland’s Lucia is the local observance of Saint Lucia’s Day on 13 December. Each year a young woman (Åland Lucia) is crowned in a ceremony in St. Göran’s Church in Mariehamn 1. Dressed in a white gown with a candle-lit crown, she and her attendants (tärnor) perform traditional songs. The evening includes a church service followed by a procession through the city and a sing-along at the town square 1. The festivities then continue with the Lucia group visiting institutions (hospitals, schools) across Åland for the rest of December.
The Lucia tradition (of Swedish origin) symbolizes light in the dark of winter. On Åland, it is celebrated in the Swedish style: the crowned Lucia (Åland’s own) represents hope, and her procession to families and public events emphasizes charity and community warmth during Advent 1. The ceremony is formal and candlelit, reflecting Ålanders’ Lutheran heritage, but also has egalitarian aspects as an annual island-wide tradition.
