The Misteri d’Elx is a sacred 15th-century liturgical drama performed annually on August 14–15 in the Basilica of Santa María in Elche. This two-act medieval play (in Valencian and Latin) depicts the Dormition, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary, complete with angels descending from the ceiling. UNESCO inscribed it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Attendees experience ancient Gregorian chants in a candlelit basilica filled with thousands of spectators, culminating in a procession and the emotional St. Mary's Assumption scene.
Dating to at least the 15th century, the Misteri d'Elx is rooted in medieval liturgical traditions and Valencian devotion to the Assumption of Mary. Legend ties its origin to King James I’s conquest of Elche (1265). The play’s dialogue and music have been passed down through local families of performers and artisans (including specialized ladders and stage apparatus). The tradition helped preserve the Valencian language when it was once suppressed, and remains a key expression of Elche’s heritage.
