Semana Santa de Lorca is a spectacular Holy Week festival famous for elaborate biblical reenactments. Two rival brotherhoods (the Paso Blanco in white and the Paso Azul in blue) parade richly embroidered floats, Roman-imperial costumes, and allegorical Biblical characters (like Cleopatra and the Antichrist) 1. Lorca’s processions (especially the Gran Desfile de la Carrera on Holy Thursday) are costly, dramatic parades in which local commitment and artistry merge. The festival was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional because of its pageantry.
It blends devout Catholic ritual with local baroque art and folklore. The town’s identity is entwined with these Easter celebrations: many families belong to the brotherhoods and practice age-old customs (for example, the legendary first female rider and Roman chariots date to the 19th and 20th centuries 1. Even without tourists, Lorquinos recreate rescues of the Passion each year as a communal faith expression.
