The Concurs de Castells is a world-famous human tower competition held biennially in Tarragona 1 2. Dozens of Catalan 'colles castelleres' (teams) assemble to build increasingly tall and complex 'castells' (human towers) which can reach up to 10 stories. Thousands of spectators, including international visitors, attend to witness this UNESCO-recognized tradition at its pinnacle.
Building human towers (castells) is a symbol of Catalan community spirit and pride 1. Each performance involves carefully choreographed teamwork, folk music and applause from the crowd. The annual competition in Tarragona showcases the best and most daring towers achieved by different provinces.
