The Hita Medieval Festival is an annual cultural fair held since the early 1960s (now 63rd edition) in Hita (Guadalajara) that recreates medieval life in honor of its medieval heritage 1. During early July, the historic town center is transformed with costumed performers, medieval markets, concerts, and theater reflecting the era of Don Juan Manuel’s 14th-century epic tales. It is a Fiesta declared of National Tourist Interest (patterned each year over the first weekend of July) that draws locals and visitors to experience jousts, period music and dance, artisan crafts, traditional foods, and educational lectures in the restored castle and plazas of Hita 1.
Hita is famed as the setting of "El Libro del Buen Amor" by Don Juan Manuel (14th c.), and the festival celebrates this medieval legacy. By staging markets, knight tournaments, and reenactments, the community honors its literary and historical roots. The festival was initiated in the early 1960s and has grown to be a defining event for the region of La Alcarria 1.
