Tønder Festival

Tønder Festival is a renowned folk and roots music festival held annually in late August in Tønder 1. Focusing on ‘handmade’ and traditional music (folk, blues, country, Cajun, etc.), it is famous for its intimate atmosphere, Danish "hygge" and close musician-audience encounters 1. Each summer, local and international artists perform on small stages and at communal events, preserving and celebrating Tønder’s folk heritage. The festival combines grand outdoor concerts with spontaneous jam sessions, and also includes art and cultural activities. It showcases local culture through folk music traditions and community participation.

Founded as a midsummer folk celebration in 1974 on the banks of the Vidå River 1, Tønder Festival grew from a small local gathering (the "Song Mill" at Bachmann’s Mill) into a major international folk festival. Despite its growth, it retains ties to local tradition: many residents volunteer, and smaller venues (including historic churches and halls) are used for performances, reinforcing Tønder’s identity as a center of Danish folk music.
