The Deutsches Chorfest is Germany's periodic national choir festival organized by the Deutscher Chorverband (German Choir Association). Held every four years, it gathers thousands of amateur singers from hundreds of choirs for city-wide concerts. It is rooted in Germany’s 19th-century movement of civic singing societies, and most recently drew 14,000 singers in Nürnberg (2025) 1. It is explicitly non-commercial and serves as a patriotic and cultural celebration of communal singing tradition 1 2.
This festival continues the early 19th-century Lieder- und Sängerbund tradition in Germany. Large choral gatherings were part of liberal civic movements (e.g. at the Hambach Festival of 1832 1). The Deutsche Chorverband promotes these roots by convening choirs from across the country for the Chorfest, linking back to the citizen-singer heritage of the Bürgerbewegung in the 1800s 1.
