The Hanselsprung is the traditional Shrove Sunday parade of Schramberg, part of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht tradition 1. Around 1,000 men and youth dress in half-carnival costumes (white shirts, pointed caps and wooden masks called “Hanseln”) and symbolically ‘jump’ through the streets accompanied by local orchestras. The festivities culminate in the "Brezelsegen" (Pretzel Blessing) where tens of thousands of salted pretzels are blessed and handed out as a symbol of community and fall farewell to carnival 1.
Hanselsprung derives from local craft guild rituals (Hanselmillers) and represents a symbolic sweeping away of winter. Its roots are local (the term ‘Hansel’ refers to guild apprentice costumes) but it fits the larger Alemannic mask carnival pattern (Parades on Fasnetsonntag and Rosenmontag). Schramberg’s citizens guard this custom as a mark of their village identity.
