1The Processioni della Settimana Santa in Mendrisio are elaborate Holy Week re-enactments dating from the 17th century, held on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in the old town. Participants wear historical Roman and Biblical costumes and carry gigantic painted lanterns ("trasparenti") while streetlights are dimmed. In the solemn Good Friday procession over 700 villagers carry statues of the Dead Christ and the Virgin of Sorrows to the accompaniment of funeral hymns 2. The atmosphere is one of deep local piety and historical spectacle. Attendees line the streets in reverent silence, often kneeling as the floats pass. The processions culminate at Roman Bridge Square and other main squares of the village, making it a unique living history event in Ticino.
These processions commemorate Christ's Passion with vivid pageantry. They reflect the strong Catholic heritage of Mendrisio and feature artworks (the "trasparenti") unique to the region.
