Knabenschiessen is Zurich's largest public folk festival held every September at the Albisgütli grounds. The centerpiece is a traditional rifle shooting competition for 13- to 17-year-olds from the city and canton, a practice dating to the 17th century. Alongside the shooting contest is a large funfair (Chilbi) with rides and food stalls, which draws hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors each year 1 2.
Originally started in 1656 to encourage marksmanship among young men, the Knabenschiessen became an annual civic event. In 1991 girls were allowed to compete as well 1. The festival reflects Swiss militia tradition and community values on skill and celebration.
