The Gruyères Cheese Festival is an annual one-day market held in the medieval town center of Gruyères. Locals and visitors sample the region’s Gruyère AOP cheese and specialties at around twenty outdoor stands. Traditional cheesemaking is demonstrated over a wood fire, continuing an old custom of emptying cheese cellars before the summer pastures. The day features local artisans, tastings, and folk entertainment.
The festival highlights the cheese-making heritage of the Gruyère region. Historically, cheesemakers would empty their cellars in spring (avant l’alpage) by sharing or selling aging cheese before the herds moved to mountain pastures. This celebration revives that local custom and showcases the artisanal craft of Gruyère AOP cheese.
