A nine-day midsummer festival (around Enyovden) held in villages of the upper Arda valley of the Rhodopes 1. Now in its 13th year (as of 2025), it celebrates harmony between people and nature, focusing on wild plant diversity. Events take place June 21–29, rotating among villages like Smilyan, Mogilitsa, Arda and Kiselchovo 1. Activities include an opening folklore fair (Izvoren Glas) with singing and dancing, food and craft bazaars, and daily workshops (e.g. natural dyeing, flower painting) 2. A highlight is an all-women Enyovden evening on June 23, with participants in white shirts dancing under the moon. On June 24, sunrise rituals and mystical celebrations continue. The festival features local crops and herbal products, traditional music concerts (evening of June 23 in Smilyan), and many hands-on cultural activities 3 1.
Rooted in Rhodope folklore, the Wild Flowers Festival honors the rich flora used in traditional medicine, cooking and rituals. Enyovden is seen as a magical time when fairies and healing herbs influence crop fertility and human health. This festival preserves the symbolic connection between wild plants and community traditions in southern Bulgaria, including beliefs in herb potency at sunrise and the significance of chamomile (Arda village’s symbol) 1.
