A traditional mummers’ parade held annually on the first Sunday of March in the village of Shiroka Laka. Dozens of local kukeri (people wearing elaborate horned masks and sheepskin costumes) march through the village to drive away winter spirits. The central square hosts colorful performances of ritual folk plays (mock weddings, births, and harvest scenes) by the kukeri. This folklore carnival is one of the last surviving pre-Christian spring rituals in the Rhodopes, and it provides visitors a rare glimpse into authentic village traditions of fertility and renewal beyond modern tourist shows.
Kukeri carnivals are an ancient Bulgarian tradition, and Shiroka Laka’s Pesponedelnik celebration is specifically rooted in Rhodope folklore. The village, known for its folk music and architecture, preserves the mummer rituals symbolizing the cycle of nature. The festival connects villagers to ancestral customs: the mock wedding of the ‘bride’ and ‘father’ on the square is believed to ensure fertility and a good harvest. Visitors can observe the cultural significance of masks and dances, which are unique to this mountain community.
