Lontzen’s Kirmes is a traditional three-day village fair held each August. It features an opening parade and ceremonial raising of the Kirmes tree by local shooting clubs. The carnival atmosphere includes funfair rides, food, and music. Community clubs meet in the fairground (Hubertushalle) for junior events (crowning a village prince and king). The fest closes with church services and a parade, blending fun with tradition.
This annual summer fair reflects the Rhineland carnival influence common to Eupen region. It’s rooted in community life: youth clubs and shooting associations organize parades, and local schools often participate. The Kirmes unites different generations, showing how even modern local culture keeps these Germanic folk traditions alive. In Lontzen it’s one of the very few big annual celebrations.
